  1. “Brief Encounter" The seminarian, Patrick, and Emma, a woman whom
    he has recently met, speak separately of their new found love.

  3. “It's Time to Leave You Lads” Ian O’Connor, the union organizer, who is fleeing the town in fear for his life, encourages the miners to join the union.

  4. “Dolan’s Betrayal” Dolan, an alcoholic coal miner, enters the parlor of
    Cartwright, the owner of the mine, to share the news of the
    whereabouts of Ian O’Conner, the union leader, and that Cartwright’s
    daughter has been seeing Patrick, the seminarian.

  5. “The Destruction” Patrick, who feels responsible for the murder of Ian
    and for his failed relationship with Emma, joins his brother, Michael, and the Mollie McGuires in sabotaging the mine. The village priest sings of the destruction of man caused by the darkness of confronting “what is.” In the distance one hears the mine being blown up by Patrick.

  6. “I Shall Be a River” Reprise Emma is singing of her lost love while
    Mother Doyle prays that her children be safe from harm, as the priest also
    speaks of mankind. The music turns to Peggy, the young widow of the
    murdered Ian O’Connor.
